The commune is ahead of Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon, and Budapest.
The US channel Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) has unveiled its top 10 best destinations in the world to retire. And it is Saint-Chinian and its region that have the honor of representing France in the fifth position of this list for the rich American retirees in search of a resort. “I was very surprised, it’s really amazing!” Exclaims the mayor, Bruno Enjalbert.
A selective ranking
From Mexico to Italy via Portugal, Malaysia or Hungary, only a few countries are represented. This is the Algarve region, in southern Portugal, which climbs on the top step of the podium. Valletta, capital of the Republic of Malta, takes second place.
As for the third, it is occupied by Mazatlán in western Mexico. The last region to leave Saint-Chinian: Abruzzo in Italy. The Saint-Chinensis is ahead of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Lisbon the Portuguese capital, Budapest in Hungary, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico and George Town on the island of Penang in Malaysia.
About CNBC’s Saint-Chinian praises the “slower pace of life in this quiet and peaceful city.” A setting of life, heritage and authenticity that Bruno Enjalbert cherishes: “The surroundings are very quiet unlike the French Riviera which is overpopulated”.
To better accommodate the elderly, the center of Saint-Chinian plans to have a medical home by next year. Free cinema on Thursday evenings, markets and festivals will end up charming volunteers at the facility.
Boost the economy
With a little less than 1,800 inhabitants, the municipality is constantly shrinking. “For 30 years, all the villages of the community of commune have seen their demography increase by 30 %.We, it is 2%”, is sorry the first magistrate. And it’s the whole economy that suffers. “Since I’ve been here, I see shops close one after the other,” he says sadly.
With this American ranking, Bruno Enjalbert wants to commit to counteract this movement. “We will have to fight to be worthy of this ranking and this will motivate us”, he announces in a firm but enthusiastic tone.
